Rick Burkhart is a social studies and social science teacher at the James Island Charter School in Columbia. Previously, Burkhart taught global studies, world history and western civilization at North Charleston High School in Charleston, where he coached the Academic Bowl and debate teams, sponsored the student subsidiary of the Rotary Club, and coordinated the school's participation in History Day competitions. A frequent world traveler, Burkhart enlivened his classes with firsthand accounts of his experiences. After years in the business world, he brought energy to his role as North Charleston's school-to-work coordinator, helping students find jobs and motivating them to pursue college degrees. Burkhart instituted a full-credit service learning course that benefited both his students and the community.
