Highland Middle School in Highland has made many advances over the past several years, largely because of the vision and efforts of principal Ricky Acuncius. Not only did Mr. Acuncius preside over the school's transformation in 1994 from a junior high to a middle school, but owing to the peer support program he created, Highland students have become better-equipped to see themselves more positively and to interact constructively with others. His efforts to integrate technology into Highland's program have also borne fruit: the mobile 25-computer lab acquired with a grant from the Illinois State Board of Education, was used last year by students for technology-related projects during Highland's annual Learning Fair.
