Kindergarten teacher and literacy laureate Rhonda Borden has played an instrumental role in improving student achievement at A. B. Hill Elementary School in Memphis. Bolstered by her effective instruction and leadership as a member of the School Improvement Committee, the school has improved its rating on the state report card, made gains in its adequate yearly progress (AYP) and increased the number of students scoring "proficient" on math and reading assessments. She has incorporated a scientific, research-based approach for developing literacy in her classroom, uses assessment data to drive instruction, and differentiates her teaching strategies to meet students' individual needs. A National Board Certified teacher, Ms. Borden was one of only three teachers in the district to receive a Certificate of Recognition for engaging in the highest level of professional development in literacy. She created a program called "Start Smart" to help parents of pre-kindergarten students appreciate the importance of early literacy. That's also a perfect title for what this outstanding teacher gives daily to every one of her students.
