Raymond Sugai is principal of Pearl Ridge Elementary School in Aiea. In an effort to help define and strengthen school culture at Pearl Ridge Elementary School, Mr. Sugai implemented TRIBES - A New Way of Learning and Being Together, a student and staff program that promotes personal growth and learning in a positive environment. Keeping to his goal of enhancing the self-esteem of the school community, Mr. Sugai has also introduced a number of student recognition programs, such as the Maika'i Award, the Maika'i Showcase and the Number One Club, which respectively reward good citizenship, academic and creative excellence, and the successful accomplishment of a personal goal. Mr. Sugai, who has twice brought National Blue Ribbon Recognition to the schools he has headed, was named 1994 National Distinguished Principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
