"I have placed a continuing emphasis on learning as the path to a successful life both in my Crow Indian society and in the non-Indian world," says Raphaelle He Does It, kindergarten teacher at Lodge Grass Elementary School in Lodge Grass. As an advocate for bilingual education, Ms. He Does It has initiated and implemented classes and in-service programs to introduce students and colleagues to the Crow language. In addition to developing a teaching unit on reading in the native language, she has also served as a resource to other educational institutions interested in pursuing their linguistic and cultural knowledge of Crow society. In her classes, Ms. He Does It uses the whole language approach to introduce children to both Crow and English as well as to the skill and pleasure of reading.
