At Oneonta Elementary School in Oneonta, where many students speak little or no English, 4th Grade Science teacher Ramona Brewer's innovative instruction reaches well beyond the classroom walls. She co-designed an exchange system of special literacy videotapes to support limited English-proficient parents in helping their children achieve reading mastery. She has made technology an integrated and dynamic part of the curriculum by using bilingual software to boost her students' skills and achievement. Mrs. Brewer, who received National Board Certification in 1999 and has recertified twice, serves as a scorer for Alabama Teacher of the Year. She has served as president of the local chapter of the state teachers' union and is a mentor to other teachers in the district.
