Phyllis Adkins, principal of Cory Elementary School in Romulus, developed a district-wide compact that galvanizes students, parents, schools and the community behind a common goal of improving student achievement. Under the program, parent volunteers and school staff form a Community Committee that works to put the compact into effect. Ms. Adkins produced a public service video about the program, entitled "Compact for Change," featuring school and community members. Ms. Adkins has implemented numerous other initiatives at Cory that have contributed to schoolwide achievement gains, including partnerships with local businesses, after-school and summer enrichment programs, compulsory summer school for low-performing students, a before-school leadership camp, and rigorous curriculum and technology in-services.
