When Peter Hathaway first became principal at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Sioux City, the inner city school was beset with problems. By implementing a series of reforms, Mr. Hathaway transformed Wilson into an award-winning school. Part of this success has come from fostering business and community partnerships and encouraging constructive behavior among students through skills training, a mentor program, an after-school program for at-risk students, an on-site health clinic, a school liaison police officer and a juvenile probation officer. Since these programs were implemented, suspensions and police referrals have decreased, while test scores have risen. Mr. Hathaway has also helped update the school's technological resources with a computer lab and full Internet access.
