In the rural Appalachian community of Moatsville, Kasson Elementary-Middle School teacher Paulette Cowley helps her third-graders acquire the learning skills and habits that will prepare them for the 21st century. Mrs. Cowley develops Internet activities and employs state-of-the-art programs to build students' technology literacy and expand their horizons. Her special education and remedial reading training, as well as her long-term collaboration with the West Virginia Writing Project, have enabled her to assist other teachers in reaching reluctant readers and writers, while advancing the school's language arts curriculum. Mrs. Cowley also promotes positive school change through participation in Kasson's K-4 Curriculum Team and the School Improvement Council.
