At Sault Area High School and Career Technical Center in Sault Ste. Marie, teacher Paul R. Pioszak uses illustrations, personal stories, analogies, metaphors and even sound effects to clarify complicated concepts for his students. In his AP U.S. Government class, students retain information without even realizing it as they use a variety of multimedia to present material they are studying. Mr. Pioszak uses an affective creative approach to teaching literature, wherein students focus on the emotional content of a text and portray the piece artistically; results have included oil paintings, sculptures, interpretive dances, and musical compositions. Nearly all of his AP students take the AP exam, and nearly all of them pass. Mr. Pioszak was recently awarded Sault Area Secondary Teacher of the year. He has traveled extensively both in and outside of the United States.
