Paul Osypuk, seventh-grade math teacher at Mansfield Middle School in Storrs, created "Mansfield Students Get Down to Business," a curriculum that integrates mathematical concepts with real-life applications. His students work in groups to create a product, research the costs involved in producing it, and compile business plans that include product samples, market surveys, and start-up costs. These students then set up makeshift stores during "Mansfield Mall Day," sell their products to the student body, calculate their earnings, analyze their sales data, pay taxes, and donate the money to a local charity. Mr Osypuk has been recognized at the local, state and national level for his innovative approach to mathematics instruction.
