Patty Morrow’s fourth-grade class at Moreau Heights Elementary School in Jefferson City is more than just a room — it’s a village. As citizens of the imaginary town of "Moreauville," Ms. Morrow’s students each fulfill a societal role, including veterinarians, cardiologists, meteorologists and even a mayor. Her students also handle budgets and paydays, write and deliver mail, and engage in enriching activities such as fractions games and a puppet theatre. As a result, students learn both basic curricular concepts as well as the organization, self-discipline, and responsibility required to maintain a successful community. Ms. Morrow also translates math and spelling concepts into chants, helping students make learning fun.
