A school leader with considerable classroom experience, Principal Patsy Higdon has introduced a wide array of innovative programs at Weaverville Primary School in Weaverville. She implemented an integrated phonemic awareness program called SMILE (Stimulating Mixtures of Integrated Learning Experiences) in grades K-1 and initiated anti-bullying workshops in grades K-2. Mrs. Higdon established a school-wide writing curriculum, played a key role in developing the district-wide math assessment for grades K-2, and helped create an effective School Improvement Plan. To track student learning, she maintains individualized assessment logs that help ensure early identification of problem areas and rapid remediation for each child. Mrs. Higdon has served on several state-level math committees and chaired the NCCTM State Committee.
