Language arts and social studies teacher Patrick Murdoch exposes his students at Young Public High School to the rigors of classical learning while fostering pride in their small, rural community of Young. Last year his students met exacting standards when they wrote in-depth analyses of Shakespeare's plays, did literary comparisons and participated in archeological studies. Mr. Murdoch also encourages his students to write constantly, strengthening their skills for success in college. He is constantly developing his own skills as an instructor, often driving long distances to attend classes at the nearest college. Mr. Murdoch has inspired local pride in the community by creating the Pleasant Valley Historical Society and Museum and establishing Pleasant Valley Day, a celebration of the community's history.
