Language arts teacher Pat Saganey-Wayne enhances the talents of all her students at Kayenta Middle School in Kayenta. Born and raised in this remote Native American town where many students do not speak English, Mrs. Saganey-Wayne helps to preserve the Navajo language and culture even while she improves her students' English proficiency. She also incorporates the latest technology into all unit plans. Under her leadership, students' SAT-9 reading scores have risen steadily. Mrs. Saganey-Wayne utilizes strategies derived from Guided Language Acquisition Design (GLAD), a professional development model designed to improve the teaching of language acquisition and literacy. She has worked on curriculum mapping and leadership issues at the school, and recently participated in an exchange group to align her school's curriculum to state standards.
