Nola Miller teaches first and second grade at Washington Avenue Elementary School in Roswell. Ms. Miller's advocacy and practice of team teaching has helped her develop an effective classroom environment that centers around hands-on experiences and parent involvement. "I strive to encourage a spirit of cooperation and teamwork, while allowing for individual differences," says Ms. Miller. "My role as a teacher is to provide an atmosphere where thinking and problem solving become vehicles, allowing children to take responsibility for their own learning and to gain confidence in themselves and their abilities as learners." Ms. Miller bases her curriculum and instructional strategies on detailed research of childhood development. A participant in the National Integrated Schools Project, Ms. Miller's own goal is to create a classroom in which children feel loved and respected for who they are.
