A deeply reflective educator, fifth-grade teacher Nina Hawkins researches innovations in teaching and applies them in her classroom at Ralph Bunche Elementary School in Detroit. She frequently analyzes test scores and changes her teaching strategies to suit her students' needs. At the start of each day Ms. Hawkins leads a morning assembly showcasing student talent, school values and ethics lessons. Each year she raises funds for and organizes a science camp combining outdoor living experiences with academics. A National Board Certified teacher, Ms. Hawkins helps ease the transition between fifth and sixth grade by taking her graduating students and their families on a tour of the local middle school. She often rewards student success with everything from school supplies and extra gym periods to Detroit Pistons games and dinner at her own home. As a result of these and many other strategies, her students regularly excel on state assessments. For Ms. Hawkins, teaching is clearly not just a job—it's a calling.
