Regarded by her principal as an "ambassador for early childhood literacy," kindergarten teacher Nicole Bass of Red Mill Elementary School in Etters turns her young students into writers by the time they reach the first grade. Using the KidWriting program, Mrs. Bass simultaneously teaches reading and writing skills by having students pronounce words slowly and write the sounds they hear. She involves parents in their children's education by teaching them how to model proper letter formation and distributing a weekly newsletter that spotlights books and learning activities parents should be sharing with their children. Teachers throughout the region often visit Mrs. Bass' classroom to observe best practices in action. She is a mentor for her school's teacher induction program and serves on three districtwide curriculum committees.
