Nelson Madden, principal of Washington Elementary School in Sedalia, not only aids students in developing their minds — he helps build their character as well. In a program he created called "Moments with Madden," Mr. Madden spends 30 minutes with his students every two weeks for a lesson about values and decision-making. He also ensures that his students are rewarded for good behavior with a Positive Action Day, an outdoor event featuring fun educational activities. In addition to his work with the students, Mr. Madden has been effective in establishing partnerships between Washington Elementary and local businesses, and has given his staff several opportunities to boost their technological proficiency with seminars and after-school workshops.
