Teacher Nancy Smith's chemistry program at Waterford Union High School in Waterford illustrates a quote by the Roman philosopher Seneca - qui docet discet ("When you teach, you learn twice."). Mrs. Smith requires her students to perform chemistry demonstrations at study halls, make presentations at the Freshman Open House, and teach chemistry lessons to local elementary students. She is advisor of the school's National Honor Society as well as the Academic Bowl and Science Olympiad teams. A mentor teacher and member of numerous national and state professional organizations, Mrs. Smith was one of 66 teachers selected to take part in the Wisconsin Academy Staff Development Initiative, which trains teachers to be state educational leaders.
