Despite the high cost of science materials and supplies, teacher Nancy Moore has created a dynamic science curriculum at Walton Elementary and Middle School in Walton using inexpensive, readily available materials. Ms. Moore's creative hands-on projects include researching and tracking the movement of a local species of turtle and planting flowers outside the classroom window to attract butterflies for study. During the summer, she serves as an advisor for the "Rock Camp" teacher training program, where she presents workshops on earth science topics related to West Virginia geology. Ms. Moore's students this year will participate in the Hands-On Universe computer project, in which they will learn to collect visual data from optical telescopes around the country.
