Nancy Florez-Muro’s first career was as a certified public accountant, but she found her passion in career choice number two—teaching. This National Board Certified educator uses a variety of strategies to meet the needs of her diverse classroom population at Lake Center Middle School in Santa Fe Springs, which includes English language learners and special education students. "Mrs. FM," as her students call her, differentiates assignments depending on student needs, and emphasizes writing and technology in all projects. She uses charts, cooperative learning and small group instruction, and her students often work collaboratively to create or analyze stories. Her instruction is research-based, and Florez-Muro teaches her students how to apply the skills they are learning to real-life situations. Her students outperform most classes in the schoolwide Accelerated Reader Program and consistently show increases on district writing tests.
