Family and consumer science teacher Nancy McIver has introduced programs at Lin-Wood Public School in Lincoln that help students bridge generations and strengthen the community. Her Adopt a Little Friend (ALF) program allows Lin-Wood students to serve as role models to younger children at a local childcare center. Through Ms. McIver's Grand Friends program, student volunteers develop a bond with the elderly residents of a local retirement home, collaborating with them on various projects such as "Shelter Packs," which provides personal hygiene items to victims of sexual and domestic violence. Ms. McIver recently developed an intergenerational "Tech-Know Buddies" program, in which her students will teach computer skills to senior citizens, the handicapped and the disabled. Such innovative programs have earned Ms. McIver state and national recognition.
