Whether she's creating an Egyptian tomb, complete with mummies, or building an actual-size replica of the hull of the Mayflower, sixth-grade teacher Michelle Evans at Valley Elementary School in Huntsville combines creativity with expert pedagogy. Her annual "Amusement Park Invention Convention" project develops students' understanding of math and science concepts as they design and build a model of an amusement park ride, which they then present to officials from Lagoon, Utah's largest amusement park. Mrs. Evans has created a reading incentive program entitled "Read for the Gold-Take the Reading Challenge" that develops literacy skills both in her students and in adults from the community who volunteer for the program.
