Michele Sherrill-Mix taught kindergarten at Hinks Elementary School in Alpena where she initiated and developed Project L.E.A.P. - Loving Educating and Parents - in which she created a variety of weekly activity packets for kindergartners and their families. Ms. Sherrill-Mix also created Project R.O.A.R. - Reach Out and Read - a program in which students were encouraged to read to their families and teachers as well as to each other. Ms. Sherrill-Mix also established science labs that fostered cooperative learning. "I strongly believe in including all students, parents and the community in the educational process," said Ms. Sherrill-Mix. "I am also committed to combining real life with learning, and to giving children chances to explore and investigate using all their senses."
