Michele Conners, science and math specialist for grades K-6, joined the staff of the Community of Peace Academy Charter School in St. Paul when the school opened in 1996. Since then, she has implemented the Responsive Classroom approach, which emphasizes the importance of social interaction and parental involvement in student learning. During her confirmation hearing to become a member of the Minnesota Board of Teaching, Ms. Conners testified before the Minnesota Senate Education Committee on several issues, including high standards, charter schools, improving teacher preparation and addressing the needs of urban students. She is now the Board's Vice Chair and a member of its Disciplinary Committee and Standards and Rules Committee.
