Michael McLeod is principal at Anson High School in Raleigh. Previously, he served as principal at Wadesboro Elementary School in Wadesboro, where he implemented programs to give the school's many Title I students ample opportunities to experience success. One of McLeod's innovations was Children's Health Outreach Preventative Services (CHOPS), which provided smaller classes, counseling, character education and community service opportunities to at-risk fifth- and sixth-grade students. He also developed the Saturday Academy, a remedial program that used fast-paced cooperative activities and technology to boost motivation and achievement. McLeod also created strategies for increased collaboration among students and staff, as well as skills for effectively communicating and managing conflict.
