Michael Johnson is the leader of not just one but two schools in Glennallen, Alaska. As principal of Glennallen Elementary School, Johnson has led students and teachers on a path to consistently high academic achievement, even with 40 percent of students eligible for free and reduced-price lunch. Glennallen Elementary is one of the highest-scoring schools in the state and was nominated by the Alaska Department of Education as a "Blue Ribbon School." Following this success, the district asked him to serve as principal of Glennallen High School as well, and many of his former elementary students are again benefiting from his leadership as high school students. Drawing upon a wealth of knowledge and instructional strategies ranging from individual learning plans and intervention, to technology and formative as well as summative assessments, Johnson also serves as the district's curriculum and professional development director, and has been instrumental in helping staff analyze and understand student data to determine where they need to focus their instruction. Johnson has opened his home to at-risk students and is very involved with the Native community.
