At Randall G. Lynch Middle School in Farmington, math teacher Melissa A. Miller uses hands-on activities, outside resources and cooperative learning groups to spark her students' interest. She developed an integrated math/science program that uses real world applications to make learning relevant and interesting to students. Mrs. Miller and her husband (also a teacher) created a highly popular Math/Science Summer Day Camp with the goal of using high-interest projects to improve students' math and science skills. Mrs. Miller regularly presents district-wide in-service workshops and participates in professional development sessions with her husband each summer. She also works with the National Space Biomedical Research Institute's Teacher Academy Project, examining the effect of microgravity on the human body and the possible implications for long-term space flight.
