As an instructor for Florida Virtual School Mary Mitchell interacts with students across the state. Over the years, she has served in a number of leadership roles with Florida Virtual School. As Director for Professional Learning, Mary Mitchell supervised the induction program and the implementation of professional learning opportunities for all staff. She also supervised the university partnerships, the pre- service internship program and professional learning product development for clients. In partnership with the University of Central Florida her team received a 2011 Gold award from USDLA in the category of Online Technology ~ Pre K-12/Higher Education. At time of the award in 1998 Biology teacher Mary Mitchell was a pioneer at Florida Virtual School, an online school based in Orlando that provides instruction via the Internet to students from Florida's public and private schools as well as those who may be home-schooled, or hospital-bound or home- bound. Always an innovator, Mrs. Mitchell created the Resource Management Academy at University High School, an environmental studies program in which the use of computers eliminates the need for paper. She also established a Medical Academy at Dr. Phillips High School, in which students use ultrasound, digital cameras, and other image processing techniques for health care applications. Mrs. Mitchell has conducted numerous workshops and seminars and served on the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of Science Teachers.
