Mary Kidwell teaches allied health sciences to grades ten through twelve at N.F. Woods Advanced Technology and Arts Center in Mooresville. "As a health care educator," says Mrs. Kidwell, "there are many opportunities to participate in community service projects, clinical experiences, field trips and guest presentations." In a two-pronged effort to increase student knowledge about medical matters and to reward them for volunteering in their community, Mrs. Kidwell has created the MD (Medical Directives) program. Students in this program exchange service hours for extra-credit points, and they are recognized in school-wide events through announcements and prizes. More than 400 hours of community service were attributed to the program last year. To meet the community's need for nursing home assistants, Mrs. Kidwell has also started a program that qualifies advanced students to be Certified Nurse Aides.
