Mary Johnstone, principal of Susitna Elementary School in Anchorage, believes in "student improvement through school improvement." She was a pioneer in implementing various alternative learning strategies such as multi-age grouping, non-graded integrated curricula, and student involvement in decision-making. Mrs. Johnstone articulates and disseminates the learning content and performance standards involved in these reforms in her work with the Alaska Committee of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. She also promotes these standards through staff development and the integration of teacher evaluation with student performance. Mrs. Johnstone is president-elect of the Alaska Elementary Principals Association, and has participated in developing the state's accreditation manual.
