Mary Sersanti has built an outstanding Latin program at Coginchaug Regional High School in Durham. With instruction that incorporates research-based practices, such as multiple intelligences theory and the use of manipulatives to aid with complex grammatical concepts, she helps students master difficult subject matter and develop an appreciation for the importance of the classics. To bring Latin to life for her students, Ms. Sersanti organizes annual field trips to Italy. She opened a chapter of the Junior Classical League that promotes the study of Latin through activities such as catapult competitions, chariot races, poetry recitations and movie nights. At the annual Latin banquet, students serve an authentic Roman meal to community members, recite poetry, perform humorous skits and receive awards. Not surprisingly, Ms. Sersanti's students perform well on standardized exams and many have received awards for their achievements in the classics.
