As art instructor for both Alma Primary and Intermediate Schools in Alma, Marla Sutton nurtures an understanding and appreciation of art in over 1,100 students by integrating other curricular subjects and using hands-on, activity-based lessons. She has named small animals after famous artists to help students learn about the artists, launched a hot air balloon, and transformed a hallway into a cave. She works closely with the media specialist to coordinate her art projects with the week's library lessons and appoints special education students to serve as her art assistants, motivating them and promoting good behavior. Ms. Sutton is the author and illustrator of several children's books, and chairs the school improvement team.
