Principal Maria Petrea has created a nationally-recognized dual language magnet program at Collinswood Elementary School in Charlotte, in which Spanish-speaking students are blended with English-speaking students. As a result, all of her students have increased achievement on end-of-grade-level tests, and she hosts frequent visits from state and federal agencies interested in her program. Through her efforts on behalf of Spanish-speaking students, Mrs. Petrea has forged strong relationships with the city's Latino community. She also supports her staff through ongoing professional development. A regular presenter on educational issues at community events as well as conferences, Mrs. Petrea has been featured in numerous magazines and journals.
