Always on the lookout for effective instructional practices, Margo Handy, principal of Pemberton Elementary School in Salisbury, participates in local, state and national reading and math conferences, takes teams of teachers and parents to visit Blue Ribbon and model elementary schools, immerses herself in a variety of educational journals, books and magazines, and accesses other pertinent resources through technology and community networking opportunities. Thanks to programs Mrs. Handy has implemented-such as an after-school tutoring program, a club for disadvantaged boys, reading and writing enrichment programs, and a voluntary school uniform policy-Pemberton students have shown rapid gains in MSPAP (Maryland School Performance Assessment Program) scores in just four years, with a marked decline in discipline problems.
All students can and do learn daily. We must believe in every student and work diligently to help them be academically successful. Building a positive relationship with each student and their family is essential for enhancing the development of every child. Providing access and opportunities to enrichment and gifted programs for all students is a must.
