Many schools sponsor "School Spirit Day" or "Dress Up Day," but Burton Elementary School Principal Margarita Hernandez takes a different approach. "Role-Model Day" brings outstanding members of the community into the classroom. Experience in special education and bilingual instruction, as well as a community liaison, child care worker, migrant program school director, and student club advisor, she keeps close to the needs of the students and the concerns of teachers. A distinguished and inspirational educational leader, Ms. Hernandez is widely credited with opening the education process to members of her city's large Hispanic and minority community.
