Mae Johnson was principal at Monterey High School in Monterey County. She presided over the successful integration of a once-troubled predominantly white high school into her own predominantly black school. Focusing on improving academics, Ms. Johnson transformed the merged school into an institution recognized for academic excellence. As for Ms. Johnson's relationship with her students: she liked them, knew them, inspired them, and engendered their respect. Ms. Johnson was named the California State Legislature's 1987 Woman of the Year.
