In 1985, when the Mississippi legislature began requiring the state's educators to pass the Mississippi Teacher Assessment Instrument (MTAI), English teacher Mable Rose (Hoskins) Oatis created a packet called "Scoring High on the MTAI" to help her fellow educators pass the test. Currently chairperson of the English Department at Meridian High School in Meridian, Mrs. (Hoskins) Oatis also serves as the school's coordinator for the state's functional literacy exam and has helped develop the revisions to Meridian's minimum proficiency requirements in language arts. Last summer, she traveled to Germany where she studied the German dual system of vocational education. In 1996, Mrs. (Hoskins) Oatis was inducted into the Mississippi University for Women's Hall of Master Teachers.
