"Mathematics is not an isolated part of the curriculum," says Lyle Sparrowgrove, Jr., who teaches mathematics at Blatchley Middle School in Sitka. In preparing middle school students for the integrated math programs favored by area high schools, Mr. Sparrowgrove has helped implement the Six Through Eight Mathematics (STEM) Project at his school, a program that teaches students to apply mathematical skills to real world activities and to connect mathematical ideas to all areas of the curriculum. This pilot program, pioneered at Blatchley, has led to dramatic improvement in students' skills as well as their ability to work with others. Mr. Sparrowgrove has also helped develop the Southeast Mathematics Conference, for Alaskan educators in the field of mathematics.
