Teacher Lori Flemming ensures that her at-risk students develop a strong foundation in reading and technology at Una Elementary School, an inner-city school in Nashville. She has boosted student interest and achievement in reading with the computer-based Accelerated Reader program, and received a state grant for a program for first- and second-graders called QUILT IT (Quality Units Integrating Learning Technology in Tennessee). Mrs. Flemming is the chairperson of several committees, including her grade level, the Multicultural Committee and the African-American Studies Committee. During the summer, she teaches reading to at-risk students through the "Starfish" program, and volunteers with the Salvation Army as an evening coordinator for their child care facility.
