Loes Hedge, an educator for 24 years, teaches fifth-graders at Thomas A. Edison Elementary School in St. Joseph. "One of the most important things that I have taught my students," says Mrs. Hedge, "is how to make decisions that they can live with." The core curriculum taught in Mrs. Hedge's classroom is focused on the acquisition and perfecting of writing skills. She also devotes at least an hour a day to subject-related computer education. Mrs. Hedge has instructed and mentored future teachers in the teacher-training program offered by Missouri Western State College. Under the auspices of the Missouri Arts Council African-American Cultural Initiative, Mrs. Hedge has pioneered an effort to bring cultural and arts programs to an underserved community. Together with her husband, she has created an evening tutoring program for underprivileged children in her community.
