As a trained Reading Recovery Teacher, Lisa Lyn Johnson uses hands-on, research-based activities at King Elementary School in Van Buren. She provides ongoing professional development for teachers, models lessons, works with students needing extra assistance, and observes and conferences with teachers. Under her leadership, all students in grades two, three and four have shown gains in reading comprehension on the STAR Test of the Accelerated Reader Program. She uses Early Literacy Learning in Arkansas (ELLA), a research-based model driven by the state's Smart Start Initiative to improve literacy at the K-2 level. Mrs. Johnson recently taught a three-day balanced literacy workshop to elementary teachers, and presented on effective cluster groups at the 2003 National TAP Conference.
