Biographical Information

Fourth-grade science teacher Lisa (Bowman) Newell exuded enthusiasm in everything she did at Burnt Chimney Elementary School in Wirtz. She established a third- grade science program that offered students a balance of lab experience, demonstration, content reading, and the use of manipulatives. She also began an after- school tutoring program that is growing rapidly. Clearly Ms. (Bowman) Newell's innovative practices yielded results, as her students' SOL scores consistently rose under her leadership. When she's was not teaching fourth grade, Ms. (Bowman) Newell conducted staff development at Burnt Chimney Elementary and teaching at the community college level. Ms. (Bowman) Newell also mentored new teachers, is a member of Phi Delta Kappa, and has presented at technology conferences and ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development). She then moved onto becoming the principal at Dudley Elementary School.

In 2024, Mrs. Newell retired from Frankin County Public Schools after 31 years of service. She is currently working at Ferrum College as the Provisional Licensure Mentor and Adjunct Professor of Teacher Education.
