Whether or not they are teen parents, students in Linda Tukey's family classes and consumer sciences classes at Jay High School in Jay learn a great deal about the challenges, responsibilities and rewards of pregnancy, childbirth and child care. In her "Great Beginnings" class, students explore such issues as the financial responsibilities involved in having a baby, prenatal development, child abuse and neglect, SIDS, and the effects of drugs and tobacco on the fetus and the newborn. Internet research is presented by each student in the form of a computer-generated brochure analyzing various baby equipment. In addition, Mrs. Tukey supervises a Family and Community Leaders Team, a student organization whose members perform community service activities.
