Leslie Bettencourt teaches science at Lincoln Junior-Senior High School, where she also serves as chair of the Service Department. Dedicated to improving science education, she designed the curriculum for the family life coarse currently used in the Lincoln school system as well as a science kit for fourth-grade students that is integrated with the language arts program. Her latest project is a community-wide science awareness program called "Chain Reaction." Ms. Bettencourt has served as director of the Rhode Island State Science Fair for 10 years; during her tenure, the number of participants has increased from 160 to 600, making it the sixth largest such fair in the nation. In 1984, she was named both Lincoln's and Rhode Island's Teacher of the Year, and in 1991 she has honored as the Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year.
