Leroy Courts, who currently teaches music to grades 5 through 8 at War Elementary School in War, began his teaching career in 1975. In the course of the following years, Mr. Courts has seen it as his personal responsibility to share "the gifts with which he has been blessed" with his students and community. His success as an educator is confirmed every time a student who arrived as a novice to music class picks up an instrument and performs. Mr. Courts says, "I measure my success as an educator by the end result of a student's accomplishment." Mr. Courts has had the distinct honor of having been named "Teacher of the Year" seven times by his students and peers. The recognition and appreciation shown Mr. Courts by his community is particularly meaningful to him. in 2006 Mr. Courts was named McDowell County's Middle School Teacher of the Year, also in 2006 Mr. Courts was selected as McDowell County's Teacher of the Year and was a contestant for West Virginia Teacher of the Year.
