Principal Le Bron McPhail galvanized his staff at Butte Elementary School in Palmer around a comprehensive curriculum mapping project that allowed them to design and develop an integrated standards-aligned curriculum. This effort not only fostered collegiality among teachers, but also has strengthened learning and instruction in all the content areas. Emphasizing community-building and character education as hallmarks of his approach to education, Mr. McPhail encourages his staff to integrate character education throughout their curriculum, and presents Leadership Counts workshops around the state. He publishes a Character Corner column in the school newsletter and was a featured speaker on character development at the statewide conference of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
In June 2002, my leadership role changed from a principal to the Director of Education and Secondary Education in the Mat-Su School Disrict. I have had the opportunity to network with other Milken Educator Award winners and share our prospectives of educational. I am continually reminded of the great wealth of knowledge in the field of education. Educators never lose their focus on students.
