"Through my administrative style, I have tried to communicate shared governance, mutual respect and a true caring for children," says Lawrence Joyo, principal of Waihe'e Elementary School in Wailuku. Mr. Joyo is responsible for the implementation of the Single Track Year Round Schooling model, an innovation that has been the subject of his frequent statewide presentations to other educators. Not only does the school's current revised schedule reflect the needs of the community, it also creates four "intersessions" that throughout the year provide opportunities to students for supplemental instruction and county-sponsored childcare that benefits entire families. To help foster a sense of social responsibility, Mr. Joyo has also instituted a series of student service programs to benefit the poor, the elderly and the community's cultural center. In 1993, Mr. Joyo's leadership helped Waihe'e Elementary School distinguish itself as a National Blue Ribbon School.
