Laurie Kelly, health and physical education teacher at Roundup Junior and Senior High School in Roundup, has devised an inventive program called Trading Cards to foster self-esteem and promote awareness about substance abuse. Students in the program become representatives and role models to students at a nearby elementary school, visiting them weekly and delivering positive messages to the youngsters. The elementary students, in turn, try to collect wallet-size cards, created by Mrs. Kelly, with the high school students' photos on one side and an anti-drug motto on the other; students collecting the most cards win prizes. Mrs. Kelly also tackles AIDS education through a peer-mentoring program in which students educate each other about issues surrounding sexual activity and AIDS.
